Stylish Cork Bar Wins National Pub Title
The Elm Tree in Glounthaune, Co Cork, was named Ireland’s number one pub at the national Licensing World Bar Awards in Dublin last night.
Situated just 10 minutes from Cork city, The Elm Tree was named Licensing World Bar of the Year 2010 after also claiming the Campari Style Bar Award earlier in the night.
The landmark premises was chosen from hundreds of bars to claim the top accolade at the fifth Licensing World Bar Awards, a gala annual banquet in The Four Seasons Hotel, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.
Over 300 members of the Irish pub trade attended the black tie event that saw publican Derek Walshe accept the Bar of the Year 2010 trophy from Nigel Tynan, Editor of Licensing World magazine and chairman of the Bar Awards.
The Elm Tree is a family-run bar which, according to Nigel Tynan, is an exceptionally well-run premises and a worthy winner of the national bar title.
‘The bar trade is under intense economic pressure so it is great to see people, such as Derek and Lorraine Walshe, who are willing to invest in their pub business.

The Elm Tree in Cork scored a double victory as it was also named the country’s most stylish premises earlier in the evening when it won the Campari Style Bar Award.
Derek Walshe accepted the Campari Style Bar Award from John Ralph, managing director of Brinkman Beverages, distributor of Campari in Ireland.
A SECOND CORK WINNER
The Bulman Bar in Kinsale, Co Cork, was named Ireland’s leading tourist pub, after it claimed the hotly contested Fáilte Ireland Tourist Bar Award – a pub with rich local heritage and an idyllic location, it rests just 10 metres from the Atlantic Ocean and overlooks Charles Fort at the sourthern end of the Village of Summer Cove.
DUBLIN WINNERS:
Dublin pubs claimed 7 awards at the Licensing World Bar Awards:
Solas Bar of Dublin’s Wexford Street was named Ireland’s number one city bar when it claimed the Bulmers Original Irish Cider City Bar Award.
Solas Bar was highlighted for its ‘contemporary design, excellent atmosphere and service and quality food and cocktail menu.’

Venu Brasserie & Bar, Anne’s Lane, Dublin 2, emerged as Ireland’s leading cocktail destination when it claimed the BOLS Cocktail Bar Award.
Venu Brasserie & Bar was highlighted for its use of fresh ingredients, in-house cocktail training programme and excellent service – making it a must visit cocktail destination on a par with New York and London.

The Wright Venue, Airside Retail Park, Swords, Co Dublin continues its meteoric rise after winning the Corona Extra Nightclub Award.
The brainchild of Wright Group owner Michael Wright, the nightclub, which can accommodate over 2,000 revelers, is a state-of-the-art premises that is modeled on similar operations in Las Vegas and London.
A second win for the Wright Group came when Wrights Angler’s Rest in Chalepizod, Dublin 20, was named winner of Gilbey’s of Ireland Bar Food Award while Ely Bar & Brasserie in the IFSC, Dublin 1, took home the Gilbeys Of Ireland Wine Award.
The Mint Bar at The Westin Hotel, Dublin 2, was named the country’s leading hotel bar, after winning the hotly contested Edward Dillon Hotel Bar Award.
Finally Gibney’s Off Licence of Malahide, Co Dublin, was named Ireland’s best pub off licence when it was awarded the Off Licence Magazine Off Licence Award.
OUTSIDE DUBLIN
Ryan’s Bar of Navan, Co Meath, was named Ireland’s best local pub when it won the Molson Coors Local Bar Award at the Licensing World Bar Awards 2010 – particular attention was drawn to the friendly customer service, homemade food, and beautifully maintained surroundings in this well known local bar.
Dessie O’Brien’s Pub in Kilrickle, Co Galway, was named Ireland’s best country pub after scooping the Fáilte Ireland Country Bar Award while The Quays Bar in Galway was awarded the Corona Extra Music Bar Award.

Am I eligible?
All licensed premises on the island of Ireland may enter the Bar Awards – each entrant will be visited at least once by a member of the Bar Awards judging panel.
How do I enter?
Simply fill out the attached entry form, send it back to us and we’ll do the rest. Alternatively visit our website – www.licensingworld.ie – and follow the Bar Awards link. If your bar is chosen as a finalist you will be contacted by Licensing World in ample time to book your place at the gala awards night at the Four Seasons Hotel, Dublin.
Why are these Awards important?
Now entering its fifth year, the Licensing World Bar Awards are dedicated to raising the profile of the licensed trade and reminding consumers of the excellent service and quality that exists within the licensed trade today. Each year the awards receive considerable national media coverage and in many cases we have received evidence of winning bars experiencing a major turnover boost.
As a finalist what do I get?
All finalists are invited to attend a gala banquet at the Four Seasons Hotel in Dublin and are provided with a specially created certificate to commemorate the occasion. This framed certificate can be displayed in your bar, acknowledging your status among Ireland’s leading licensed premises.
And if I win?
Each category winner is presented on stage with a specially commissioned trophy. Press releases and images are provided for your convenience and we at Licensing World will assist in highlighting your bar’s premier position among Ireland’s elite licensed premises.
Who are the judges?
We have compiled an expert panel of judges who are themselves former industry people, training and service experts and food and tourism representatives. Professionalism in the judging process is our utmost concern and every premises that enters the awards will be visited on at least one occasion. The judge’s decision and experiences are confidential and no correspondence will be entered into.
How do I book my place?
A detailed list of all finalists will be published in the May issue of Licensing World. Category winners will only be announced at the actual Bar Awards ceremony, scheduled to take place on 21 June at the Four Seasons Hotel, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4. For information on how to book your place at the Bar Awards ceremony, you can contact our events team on 01 764 2700. Places are limited however so do book early.

ABOUT The Elm Tree, Licensing World Bar of the Year 2010
Originally opened in 1947 as a Beamish tied house, The Elm Tree was officially re-opened earlier this year by Billy Kelleher, TD Minister for Trade & Commerce after extensive renovation by Derek and Lorraine Walshe.
Situated within the heart of the East Cork area, just off the main Cork to Midleton road, The Elm Tree is located within minutes of Fota Wildlife Park, Cobh Heritage Centre, The Irish Distillery in Midleton and a number of Cork’s most popular golf courses.

Am I eligible?
All licensed premises on the island of Ireland may enter the Bar Awards – each entrant will be visited at least once by a member of the Bar Awards judging panel.
How do I enter?
Simply fill out the attached entry form, send it back to us and we’ll do the rest. Alternatively visit our website – www.licensingworld.ie – and follow the Bar Awards link. If your bar is chosen as a finalist you will be contacted by Licensing World in ample time to book your place at the gala awards night at the Four Seasons Hotel, Dublin.
Why are these Awards important?
Now entering its fifth year, the Licensing World Bar Awards are dedicated to raising the profile of the licensed trade and reminding consumers of the excellent service and quality that exists within the licensed trade today. Each year the awards receive considerable national media coverage and in many cases we have received evidence of winning bars experiencing a major turnover boost.
As a finalist what do I get?
All finalists are invited to attend a gala banquet at the Four Seasons Hotel in Dublin and are provided with a specially created certificate to commemorate the occasion. This framed certificate can be displayed in your bar, acknowledging your status among Ireland’s leading licensed premises.
And if I win?
Each category winner is presented on stage with a specially commissioned trophy. Press releases and images are provided for your convenience and we at Licensing World will assist in highlighting your bar’s premier position among Ireland’s elite licensed premises.
Who are the judges?
We have compiled an expert panel of judges who are themselves former industry people, training and service experts and food and tourism representatives. Professionalism in the judging process is our utmost concern and every premises that enters the awards will be visited on at least one occasion. The judge’s decision and experiences are confidential and no correspondence will be entered into.
How do I book my place?
A detailed list of all finalists will be published in the May issue of Licensing World. Category winners will only be announced at the actual Bar Awards ceremony, scheduled to take place on 21 June at the Four Seasons Hotel, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4. For information on how to book your place at the Bar Awards ceremony, you can contact our events team on 01 764 2700. Places are limited however so do book early.
